EMDR Intensives

feel better faster

what is an EMDR intensive?

TLDR: A whole lot of therapy over a few days to help you feel better.

The long version: An EMDR intensive happens over the course of a 1-5 days. It can help resolve the lasting impacts of traumatic incidents and shift relational patterns + behaviors in which you feel stuck. Clinical studies show that the intensive format for implementation of EMDR is equally effective to traditional weekly therapy, but results happen far more quickly.

An EMDR intensive allows you to target the issues you want to work on with greater focus, leading to faster results. With an EMDR intensive, unlike traditional therapy, you don’t have days or weeks between sessions. The condensed therapeutic experience of an intensive helps you hone in on and resolve specific problems.

you might benefit from an EMDR intensive if you…

  • feel like 50 minutes is, “never enough,” to get to the heart of the issue

  • feel perpetually stuck in the past

  • have recently experienced traumatic incident(s)

  • have a history of traumatic incident(s) that continue to impact you

  • want relief from harmful relational patterns that seem to stick around, despite your best efforts to change

  • have a busy schedule that makes it difficult to schedule weekly sessions

  • are engaged in another type of therapy (i.e. couples or family therapy) that would benefit from you resolving issues of your own

so how does this work?

EMDR intensives can be anywhere from half a day to five days- but don’t worry, we’ll decide how many days you will be doing before we start!

Here’s how it works: during our initial consultation we’ll decide together how long your intensive will be. This will be determined off of issues you want to work through and the goals you have. Half a day to two days is often sufficient for a single event trauma (i.e. a car crash), whereas three to five days is usually recommended for more complex issues (i.e. attachment-based traumas).

Your intensive day(s) will begin at 9:30am and will go until 4:30pm. We will take an hour break for lunch around 12 or 1pm, as well as snack + restroom breaks as needed throughout the day.

FAQs

  • While EMDR intensives are often incredibly transformational, the work of being a human is never over. If you don’t feel like we are able to get through everything you’d hoped, we can schedule another intensive. We can also explore continuing your work with an EMDR therapist in a more traditional weekly therapy setting

  • I work from an integrated model in my EMDR intensives. This means I often incorporate elements of Internal Family Systems, somatic techniques, creative interventions (including sand tray, and art directives), and interpersonal neurobiology. Be warned- I will happily pull out the finger paint when necessary!

  • Rescheduling 15 or more days in advance will not incur a fee.

Rescheduling less than 15 days in advance will result in you forfeiting your deposit and another deposit will be required to secure your rescheduled intensive.

Cancellations must be made 30 days or more in advance in order to have your deposit refunded. Cancellations made less than 30 days in advance will result in a forfeited deposit.

  • Yes! But just like with an adult, we will want to make sure that an intensive is the right format of therapy for your child.

  • I offer intensives in-person in my office in SE Portland.

  • Not much! Consider treating this experience like a retreat, engaging in activities that are life-giving and restorative for you. I do recommend minimizing the amount of non-essential obligations during (and for a few days following) your EMDR intensive to give you space to process and heal.

  • If you’re looking to get help quickly, intensives are a great way to bypass waitlists for weekly therapy. Depending on the number of days we decide upon, I can usually offer availability within 2-4 weeks. Of course, we can always schedule further out as well.

  • Yep! All intensives take place in my office in Portland, OR. I am happy to provide recommendations for places to stay, dining, and activities while you’re here for your intensive.
